WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF SECURITY CAMERAS?

Surveillance cameras can be divided into many categories based on the features or type. In this article we will focus on 6 main types: Bullet, Dome, Turret, Box, Pan-Tilt-Zoom (PTZ) and Fisheye.

Camera type is usually determined based on a several factors like mounting surface, environment, features, field of view, range.

BULLET CAMERAS

Bullet security cameras are what usually comes to our mind when thinking about the surveillance camera. They are very popular and versatile. They can usually be used indoor or outdoor and mounted on the wall or ceiling and even angled surfaces. Majority of modern bullet cameras feature 3-axis rotation and adjustment, so they can be mounted virtually on any surface. Just the look of a bullet camera leaves no doubt that surveillance system is in use. They serve as a great deterrent as well. Bullet cameras come with variety of different lenses, night vision options and range. Smaller ones can be used indoor or to cover a small areas outdoor. Larger ones are great for outdoor and any industrial environment. Picture quality can be ass good as it gets, because bullet cameras are not required any additional enclosures. At Venture, we use bullet type cameras mostly for commercial applications. Warehouses, parking lots, any outdoor surveillance, industrial and manufacturing are all suitable for bullet cameras.

DOME CAMERAS, INDOOR AND OUTDOOR

Dome cameras can come in indoor or outdoor version. Indoor version are usually made of plastic and are light and easy to mount. Outdoor versions are almost always vandal proof rated as well. They are made of aluminum alloy or other metal and with a shock proof glass or plastic, are capable of withstanding harshest conditions and abuse. Dome cameras work the best when mounted on the ceiling or on the wall using a special wall mounting bracket. Some entry level dome cameras do not have 3-axis adjustment, so mounting them on the wall without a bracket, will result in a crocked picture and is not recommended due to the exposure to the elements. Dome cameras come with different types of lenses and features. Due to their stylish look, dome cameras are a great choice for commercial installations in retail, hospitality, healthcare. Vandal Proof dome cameras are often found in high risk facilities, correctional and military applications, banks and government buildings. Small size dome cameras are great for indoor residential surveillance. However we do not recommend dome cameras for a night time surveillance, where infrared night-vision technology is being used. Reflections off the dome surface are often an issue, when using infrared equipped dome cameras in the dark.

TURRET CAMERAS

Turret aka Eyeball type cameras have been getting more and more popular. They are a cross between bullet and dome cameras, offering the best of both designs. 3-axis adjustment allow for mounting on any surface at any angle. There are no issues related to infrared night-vision, common with dome cameras. Compact size and easy and fast adjustment make turret cameras an installers favorite. They usually come in weather-proof versions, good for outdoor, but also indoor use. Entry level models come with a fix lens while advanced models can be equipped with vari-focal lens, usually motorized, so both, zoom and focus can be controlled remotely from the DVR, NVR, software or mobile app. At Venture Security, we install turret cameras in 90% of our residential applications. We also use them for commercial jobs, usually smaller ones, like various retail installations. But we also use turret cameras for large commercial projects and some industrial. There is rarely a reason for not using a turret camera as many of them are also temper-proof rated up to IK10.

BOX CAMERAS

Box cameras were very popular in the early days of video surveillance. Today, they are rather rare. The major advantage of box cameras, is basically unlimited choice of lenses. Typically box cameras do not come with any lens. Lens are purchased separately and come in many different specifications. Fixed or vari-focal. With auto iris or manual. From wide angle field of view to powerful zoom. Box cameras are not rated for outdoor. However they can still be used outdoor with a suitable outdoor enclosure. Those come with a heater and blower option, good for any weather conditions. At Venture Security, today we barely use box cameras. We only use them in a very controlled environment, or whenever we need a fixed camera with a powerful zoom.

PAN, TILT, ZOOM, PTZ CAMERAS

Pan Tilt Zoom, or PTZ cameras are a common solution for an active surveillance, which involves security guard presence. PTZ cameras can pan, tilt and zoom. They can follow pre-set patterns or be manually controlled by a security personnel. With the optical zoom built-in on most of the models, operator can zoom-in on the desired subject, from hundreds of feet away. New models have built-in AI as well, adding additional feature like line crossing detection, target detection, advanced motion detection, target tracking. PTZ cameras are a great solution for a surveillance of any large open spaces, like parking lots, airports, sport's stadiums, farms or golf courses and similar. As good as PTZ cameras are, there needs to be a reason for using them. We often see PTZ cameras being used the same way as fixed cameras. With an average price of a PTZ cameras being more than the price of 4-5 fixed cameras, it important not to use PTZ's where their full potential will never be utilize. Often it makes more sense to install a few fixed cameras, then trying to cover "too much" with one PTZ.

FISHEYE CAMERAS

Fisheye type cameras are surveillance cameras with a 360 degree view. Usually mounted on the ceiling, pointing down. The camera is capable on rendering a full 360 degree view of the area. There are a few different ways of viewing a fisheye cameras. They can act as digital PTZ cameras, panoramic 360 degree camera or a few fixed lens cameras. Due to it's very wide viewing angle, fisheye cameras have a limited range. New models have nigh vision and audio built-in. Some have also AI analytics and advanced object recognition and tracking feature. We recommend them for small to medium size open rooms, like classrooms, smaller and medium sport or concert venues and some retail applications. They also work well when installed to overview a parking lots and other open outdoor areas. It's worth to note that Fisheye cameras use fixed lens. Even though they are usually equipped with a zoom feature, it is only a digital zoom. The resolution of the Fisheye camera is very important and we wouldn't recommend anything with a resolution lower than 12 Megapixels.
